Difference in Fire Extinguishers

A/B/C (Dry Chemical)

What It’s Best For:

Multi-purpose use on Class A (ordinary combustibles), Class B (flammable liquids/gases) and Class C (energized electrical equipment).

How It Works:

A fine dry chemical powder interrupts the fire’s chemical reaction and helps smother flames; on Class A, some powders provide limited surface coating to reduce re-ignition.

Common Places You’ll See It:

Homes, garages, offices, warehouses, vehicles—general “cover most scenarios” choice.

Pros:

  • Versatile (covers the widest range of common fire types)
  • Usually cost-effective and widely available

Cons:

  • Leaves messy residue that can damage electronics and require significant cleanup
  • Powder cloud can reduce visibility and irritate breathing
  • Less ideal for delicate equipment rooms or kitchens with hot oils

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)

What It’s Best For:

Class B (flammable liquids) and Class C (electrical) fires. (Not intended for deep-seated Class A fires.)

How It Works:

Discharges cold CO₂ gas that displaces oxygen around the fire and cools the surface.

Common Places You’ll See It:

Server rooms, electrical panels, labs, workshops—areas where clean agent matters.

Pros:

  • No residue (clean discharge), great for electronics
  • Effective on flammable liquid fires when used correctly

Cons:

  • Poor on Class A “ember” fires (can re-ignite after the gas dissipates)
  • Short discharge time; requires accurate aim
  • Asphyxiation risk in small/poorly ventilated spaces; horn/nozzle can cause cold burns

K-Class (Wet Chemical)

What It’s Best For:

Class K fires—cooking oils and fats (commercial kitchens, deep fryers).

How It Works:

A wet chemical reacts with hot oils/fats to create a soapy foam layer (saponification) that smothers the fire and helps prevent re-ignition while also cooling.

Common Places You’ll See It:

Restaurants, cafeterias, food trucks, commercial cooking lines.

Pros:

  • Designed specifically to stop re-flash in hot grease/oil fires
  • Creates a stable blanket over the fuel surface

Cons:

  • Not a general-purpose extinguisher; limited use outside kitchen-oil scenarios
  • Cleanup required; can be corrosive to some surfaces if not cleaned promptly
